One Piece: 10 Best Story Arcs, Ranked

Monkey D. Luffy's adventure with his friends to find One Piece is very exciting and challenging. They sail from one island to another and make adventure stories there. Not only that, they also often meet strong enemies. There was laughter and sometimes tears that enveloped their adventures.

In this article, I would like to discuss about the best One Piece arc based on my opinion while enjoying the storyline of this anime.

10. Thriller Bark

In this arc, Luffy first met Brook who then joined his crew as a musician. Brook at that time lost his shadow and he could burn when in the sun. Luffy, who is very stubborn, was willing to reclaim Brook’s shadow that was stolen by a Sichibukai named Gecko Moria.

However, in the first battle Luffy still lost, instead his shadow was stolen and inserted into the body of one of the giants named Oz. The fight against Oz was not an easy thing. The SHP crew had to join their forces together to overthrow the giant who had Luffy's powers. This is one of the most intense battles in this arc.

When his crew was overwhelmed, Luffy with a terrible form came to their rescue. He had just obtained the power of a hundred shadows which allowed him to match the power of Oz. Another scene in this arc that was very touching is Zoro's sacrifice when Kuma was about to take Luffy's head.

9. Sabaody Archipelago

When watching this arc I became a bit sad because of Strawhat Pirate's ruin against Kuma and Kizaru. They had to be separated to various strange places. However, that defeat was a motivation for them to become stronger before entering the New World.

Some of the moments that make this arc  so cool are the beating of the Ternyubito at the human auction and the appearance of eleven Supernovas with various characters and powers. Then, followed by the emergence of a legend, Silvers Rayleigh, who is the right hand of the pirate king.

One of the things that was also very surprising was when Rayleigh told about the truth that Roger disbanded his pirates and then surrendered himself to the marine. He also shared that Roger had the power to hear various sounds.

8. Impel Down

After heard the news that Ace was about to be executed, Luffy without a doubt entered Impel Down, the strongest prison in the world of One Piece. He was willing to postpone his desire to meet his friends and chosed to save Ace first. With the help of Hancock, who had fallen in love with Luffy, he was finally able to enter secretly.

In prison, he met some of his past enemies such as Buggy and Mr.3 or Galdino. They had funny moments when they faced the prison guard and beasts in the prison. Besides them, Luffy also met with Bon Clay who had saved him in Arabasta at that time.Unfortunately, Luffy had to face Magellan before meeting Ace.

With great difficulty, Bon Clay helped Luffy and had been trough a hard time to seek help until they met Ivankov who is the queen of Okama from Kamabakka Kingdom. Furthermore, a shocking fact was revealed when Ivankov admitted he was a part of the Revolutionary Army. He was also very surprised to learn that Luffy is the son of Dragon, the leader of the Revolutionary Army.

After got the news that Ace was taken out of prison, Luffy with strong will finally decided to go to Marineford to save his brother. With the help of strong characters like Jinbei and Crocodile as well as other prisoners, they confined the prison and go out together for a breath of fresh air.

7. Alabasta

In this arc, Luffy and his crew were caught in an internal conflict of a country, where the people no longer put their trust in the leader of the country. However, Vivi, who is the princess of the kingdom, still had hope to prevent bloodshed between the people and the kingdom.

Vivi's determination was so strong to stop the conflict. So, Luffy and their crew was willing to risk his life and standing with Vivi. They also had to confront the mastermind of this rebellion, a criminal organization called Baroque Works. This organization led by a Sichibukai named Crocodile.

The reason why Arabasta belong to one of the best arcs is the many tearing moments in the story. An example is the sacrifice of Pell the protector of Arabasta when carrying a giant time bomb whose explosion has a radius of about five kilometers. Furthermore, Vivi's farewell to Luffy et al was also a very touching moment.

6. Skypiea

Despite being laughed at and belittled by people, in the end Luffy made it to the sky island. They had proven to Cricket and his friends that the sky island does exist, not just a hoax. On the sky island Luffy had to deal with the self-proclaimed God Enel and his priests.

In addition, he and his crew also had to get into conflict with the Shandia who want to seize their ancestral land. The culmination of their troubles was when Luffy had defeated Enel and rang the Golden Bell.

Another thing that make this arc so fascinating is the story of friendship between Norland and Calgara which leaves deep sorrow for their descendants. In addition, we got a great news about Roger’s message in Golden Bell that’s so important in story.

5.  Dressrosa

Dressrosa is a country in the New World that was led by Doflamingo. Despite its majestic and charming appearance, Dressrosa had a dark side. The funny toys turned out to be humans who had once rebelled against Doflamingo. They were more loyal to the old royal family who ruled this country peacefully.

There were many things that happen in this arc that may be long enough to describe one by one. One of them was the battle at the Colosseum with the main prize of Ace's Mera-mera no Mi fruit. Some of the moments in Dressrosa that I think was really cool include Luffy's meeting with Sabo, the reveal of Law's real identity who is descended from D, the first appearance of Gear 4, sad love stories like those experienced by Kyros and Senor Pink. As the climax of the epic moment in this arc was the formation of a large SHP fleet with several strong characters such as Cavendish, Barto, Hairudin, Sai, etc.

4. Enies Lobby

This is one of the best One Piece arcs as long as I enjoy this anime. There are many impressions that cannot be easily forgotten in this arc, especially when Luffy issued a challenge to the World Government by burning the flag in Enies Lobby.

They were not afraid of threats or forces that might destroy them just to save their precious crew. The fight between SHP members against CP9 members was one of the interesting battles to enjoy, especially Luffy's fight with Rob Lucci which is very intense.

One of the most touching moments was when the Going Merry, which had already reached its limit, helped Luffy and friends so that they could get out of the Buster Call threat that had devastated Enies Lobby. Unfortunately, the Going Merry trip had to end midway.

With a heavy heart, Luffy and his crew paid their last respects to the Going Merry by burning their beloved ship in the sea. The Going Merry’s funeral is one of the saddest moment in the story that made fans cry a lot.

3. Whole Cake Island

In this arc, Luffy had to go through a tough battle to get Sanji back home. He had desperately moment to defeat Cracker, one of Big Mom's commanders, who has a high bounty. The victory was only temporary because he still had to deal with the other Big Mom troops.

Another very touching scene was a moment when Sanji had to fight against Luffy. It was really a emotional fight between friend that was so heartbreaking. However, after learning that he and Germa were framed by Big Mom, Sanji finally agreed to return to Luffy's side. The two of them together with Bege formed a plan to kill Big Mom and destroy the wedding party, but their plan totally failed.

In addition, there was an important mission to copy Big Mom's Road Poneglyph. This task was carried out by Brook and Pedro by utilizing their infiltration skills. Beside that Jinbei finally joined the SHP crew as a helmsman. Furthermore, one of the things that made this arc very interesting is the battle between Luffy vs. Katakuri which is very exciting and intense. Their fight is one of the coolest fights in anime.

2. Marineford

Marineford is the second best arc in One Piece. I think all One Piece fans agree that this arc is one of the best arc throughout One Piece's journey. This arc tells of the great war between the Whitebeard pirates and the marine in order to save Ace who was about to be executed. This war is the biggest war that has ever happened in the world of One Piece.

There were many interesting things that happened in this war, such as the revelation that Ace was Roger's biological son, which immediately caused a stir in the public. However, Luffy's arrival changed the direction of the war. Luffy bravely broke through the marine and tried to reach the execution stage.

Even though he managed to save Ace at first, fate had to say otherwise. Ace died protecting Luffy from Akainu's magma attack. Even so, the war did not stop. The bastard marine was still igniting the fire of battle for the pirates who lost their desire to continue the battle after Ace died.

In addition to Ace's death, Whitebeard also died after receiving repeated attacks from Teach and his comrades. The war could only be stopped when Shanks came to Marineford as an arbiter. He was also responsible for the funeral of Ace and Whitebeard. After heard the offer from Shanks, Sengoku as the Grand Fleet Admiral agreed to end the war.

Ace's death leaves a deep wound in Luffy's heart. The news was also received by the crew which made them devastated for not being able to accompany Luffy at his hardest times. Whitebeard's death signaled that a new era had been born. In the seconds of his death, Whitebeard said that One Piece really does exist. It certainly ignited a fire within the pirates.

1. Wano

So far, the Wano arc is the best arc in One Piece, although this storyline is still on progress and starting to reach the climax, which is the battle between the alliance of pirate, samurai, ninja, and Mink tribe against the Shogun and the Kaido pirates.

In this arc, several Supernovas with terrible powers gathered with their respective motives. Furthermore, many interesting stories appeared in the Wano arc and made fans very impressed, such as Kaido's transformation into a dragon, members of the terrifying Beast pirates, Luffy's defeat against Kaido, Big Mom's presence, Oden’s journey with Whitebeard and Roger pirates, Onigashima war, and other mysteries.

In addition, the Wano arc also presents scenes that are quite sad, such as the story of the death of Lord Yasuie who is a former Daimyo, and the fate of Killer who became a victim of the SMILE devil fruit. What makes this arc very interesting is that it will present a battle between Luffy and the alliance against the Yonkou Kaido in the beginning.

After all, this arc was almost at its peak. We have now been presented with a tense final battle between Kaido vs. Luffy. Their fight will be a great fight in the story. So, we just have to wait for the final outcome of the battle at Onigashima.
