In the world of Tokyo Ghoul, there's unique power called Kagune that used by ghouls in a battle. Kagune basically is ghoul's predatory organs and serves as weapons they can use to fight and defend themselves against enemy attacks.
Kagune are formed from RC Cells produced by the Ghoul's body. Furthermore, the quality and quantity of RC Cells also determine the characteristics and strength of a Ghoul's kagune.
Generally, kagune are divided into four types: ukaku, kokako, rinkaku, and bikaku. In addition to these four types, there are two more, arguably rarer, types: chimera and kakuja.
For more details, we will discuss the types of kagune and their characteristics in this article. Check out the full details below!
1. Ukaku
Ukaku is a kagune that is released from shoulder area and shaped like wings. This type excels in speed and agility, making them capable of fighting both close and long-range.
When fighting, the ukaku type typically crystallizes their kagune and then attacks the enemy with sharp bullets at high speed.
However, the ukaku type is very weak in stamina. They expend a large amount of energy when moving, making them unable to fight for long periods of time.
2. Kokaku
Unlike the previous types, the kokaku is a type of kagune located below the shoulder blade and contains a high density of RC cells. Because of this, the kokaku is as hard as metal and boasts strong defense.
Typically, the kokaku takes the form of armor or a shield that can be used as protection. For offensive purposes, this kagune form can be transformed into melee weapons, such as drills, hammers, and swords.
Although this type boasts excellent defense, the kokaku is quite weak in speed compared to the other types.
3. Rinkaku
The rinkaku is a type of kagune located at the waist and shaped like scaly tentacles. This type has superior regeneration, allowing them to heal their wounds quickly.
Furthermore, the Rinkaku type possesses immense and brutal strength. This is not surprising, as the tentacles are relatively light, making it easy for them to attack opponents.
Although the Rinkaku type excels in regeneration and strength, this type of kagune is weak and easily destroyed by opponents.
4. Bikaku
Bikaku is the most balanced type of kagune in terms of strength, defense, and speed. This kagune is located around the tailbone and is shaped very much like an animal's tail.
Compared to other kagune, bikaku can be considered the ideal kagune type. A bikaku typically only creates one tail for attack, but some users of this type are capable of creating more than one.
Given its balanced characteristics, the CCG often utilizes the bikaku type to create quinques that can be used by novice investigators.
5. Chimera
Chimera is a very interesting and rare case in the Ghoul world. This type is the result of a hybrid of two kagune types. Those who possess this type are purebred offspring of a Ghoul couple.
In the story, only three characters possess this type of kagune: Hinami Fueguchi, Nutcracker, and Shikorae. All three are capable of using two types of kagune simultaneously to attack their opponents.
6. Kakuja
Kakuja is arguably the most powerful and terrifying type of kagune. This type of kagune is extremely rare and can be considered abnormal. To reach the kakuja stage, a Ghoul must engage in cannibalism by consuming other Ghouls.
When a Ghoul consumes another Ghoul, their RC cells mix. This effect causes the Ghoul's kagune to mutate abnormally, leading to the evolution of a kakuja.
Typically, kakuja take the form of a type of extremely strong armor that covers the entire body. In Kaneki's case, his kakuja resembles a centipede.
