10 Summon Types in Yu-Gi-Oh, Explained

If you like Yu-Gi-Oh! series, you are definitely familiar with the concept of Summon. It's important to understand by player because there are various Summon types. Each Summon have certain rules and conditions depending on the monster you want to summon to the arena.

Below, MogiMogy has summarized all Summon types in Yu-Gi-Oh!. Check out the full review below!

1. Normal Summon

Normal Summon is the most common type and easy to use. Players just have to choose the monster they want to summon to the battle area.

The monsters that can be summoned via this method are generally low level monsters with not very high ATK/DEF. Additionally, players can normally only summon one monster per turn.

2. Tribute Summon

Monsters that are Level 5 or above cannot be summoned via normal way. To summon these monsters, players must sacrifice at least one monster in the arena. This method is known as Tribute Summon.

The higher the level of the monster you want to summon, the greater the number of monsters that must be sacrificed. For example, a Level 7 Dark Magician requires two sacrifices monster.

3. Flip Summon

Flip Summon can be activated when the player manually changes the position of the monster in the arena. Players will flip the monster face-down in a defensive position to face-up in an attacking position.

According to various references, Flip Summon is not included in Normal Summon or Special Summon because it works differently. Normally, players can only Flip Summon once per turn.

4. Special Summon

As the name suggests, Special Summon is a special summoning way bases on card effects or certain conditions that must be fullfilled. For this reason, this method is quite complicated compared to the previous summon.

One example of a monster summoned via Special Summon is Mai Valentine's Harpie Lady Sisters. It can only be summoned with a spell card called Elegant Egotist.

Another example is summoning a monster using a card effect, such as Monster Reborn. These spell cards allow players to summon monsters from the graveyard to the arena.

In Yu-Gi-Oh!, Special Summon is divided into several more specific sub-categories. They are Fusion Summon, Ritual Summon, Synchro Summon, Xyz Summon, Pendulum Summon, and Link Summon.

5. Fusion Summon

As the name suggests, Fusion Summon is a  special method to summon Fusion monsters from the Extra Deck using card effects, such as Polymerization. Not only that, players must prepare the materials needed to fusion.

As an expample, we can see the case of Dark Paladin which was shown by Yugi/Atem in the story. To summon the monster, he needs three cards as materials. They are Polymerization, Dark Magician, and Dark Paladin.

6. Ritual Summon

Ritual Summon is a special summon for Ritual monsters. Players have to prepare many things for a ritual process, from preparing effect cards to sacrificing monsters according to the requirements or conditions.

An example of a Ritual Summon is Black Luster Soldier. To summon the monster, players need a spell card called Black Luster Ritual and must sacrifice monsters with a total level of 8 or more.

7. Synchro Summon

Synchro Summon is popularized in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. This method is used to summon Synchro Monsters. As in the previous case, players require elaborate preparation.

First of all, players must sacrifice two monsters along with one Tuner monster which is a requirement for summoning the Synchro Monster. In addition, the total level of the sacrificed monster must be equal to the level of the Synchro Monster you wish to summon.

One example of a Synchro Monster is the Stardust Dragon which has Level 8. This monster can be summoned by sacrificing three monsters as follows: Debris Dragon (Level 4 Tuner), Speed Warrior (Level 2 non-Tuner), and Quillbolt Hedgehog (Level 2 non-Tuner). -tuner).

8. Xyz Summon

The next type is Xyz Summon which is popularized in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL. The way this method works is by overlying two or more monsters that have a level equivalent to the Xyz Monster Rank.

An example of an Xyz Monster is Number 39: Utopia which has Rank 4. To summon this monster, players can use two Level 4 monsters, such as Gagaga Magician and Gogogo Golem.

9. Pendulum Summon

Like 5D's or ZEXAL series, Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V features a new summoning method called Pendulum Summon. This summoning method allows players to summon multiple monsters at the same time.

The explanation of this method is quite complicated. First, players must have two Pendulum Monsters in Pendulum Zones. After that, the Pendulum Scale on each monster will measure and determine the level range of the monsters that can be summoned.

We can take the example of two Pendulum Monster cards, namely Performapal Barokuriboh with Pendulum Scale one and Performapal Celestial Magician with Pendulum Scale eight. In both cases, players can summon many monsters, ranging from level two to seven.

10. Link Summon

To conclude, there is the Link Summon introduced in Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS to summon Monster Link. The way is to sacrifice monsters controlled by the player according to the number of Link Ratings on the Link Monster.

We can take the example of Decode Talker which has a Rating of 3. To summon the monster, players need three monsters in the arena. The higher the rating of the monster, the higher the sacrifice.
