Throughout his adventures, Luffy has often found himself in dangerous situations that could have threatened his life. However, he has always survived death in miraculous and unexpected ways.
Here are some of the best moments when Luffy survived certain deaths.
10. Luffy Ate Poisonous Fish on the Way to WCI
When Luffy and his friends went to Whole Cake Island to rescue Sanji, they encountered a food shortage because Luffy suddenly became a makeshift chef, using up the food supplies.
En route, they managed to catch a giant fish and obtain a new supply of food. However, Luffy, already starving, immediately bit into the fish, even though its skin was highly poisonous.
Normal poisons would normally have no effect on Luffy, who had developed immunity to poisons after surviving Magellan's poison. However, the poison from the fish left Luffy helpless and in a terrible state. Even Chopper, the doctor, was at a loss as to what to do.
Fortunately, they then met Sanji's older sister, Reiju, who had the power to overcome poison. One interesting thing here is how Reiju saved Luffy. She sucked the poison out of Luffy's body by kissing him. After being saved by Reiju, Luffy's condition slowly improved.
9. Luffy Bled Out on Fish-Man Island
In the battle against Hody on Fish-Man Island, Luffy lost a lot of blood due to Hody's attack. This situation naturally put his life in danger. To survive, he had to receive a blood donation from someone with the same blood type as Luffy.
The problem became serious because no one was willing to donate blood, especially fish-men, as donating blood to humans was prohibited there.
However, the situation changed thanks to Jinbe's actions. His blood type matched Luffy's, and he voluntarily donated his blood to Luffy. Jinbe's actions were seen as truly heroic. Interestingly, Jinbe and Luffy's blood donation was the first step towards peace between humans and the fish-man race.
8. Luffy Fought Rob Lucci at Enies Lobby
The battle against Rob Lucci at Enies Lobby was one of the most difficult for Luffy to win. He had to fight tooth and nail to the death to defeat Lucci, whose strength was above average at the time.
During the battle, Luffy was knocked out helplessly by Lucci's attacks. However, he managed to get back on his feet thanks to encouragement from Usopp and his motivation to save Nico Robin.
Luffy was able to beat Lucci to a pulp and defeat him in battle. However, he was temporarily immobilized due to the effects of overexerting himself. Furthermore, he and his friends were under threat from the Buster Call.
In the midst of this desperate situation, the Going Merry came to their rescue. With great difficulty, Luffy and his friends finally managed to escape Enies Lobby and the Buster Call attack.
7. Luffy About to Be Eaten by a Sea Monster
When Luffy was a child, he got into trouble with a group of bandits led by Higuma because he wasn't accepted and Shanks' reputation was being tarnished.
Although Shanks and his group came to Luffy's aid, Higuma escaped, taking Luffy with him and taking him to the sea. There, they encountered a ferocious sea monster.
Luffy was on the verge of death because he couldn't swim. Fortunately, Shanks managed to save Luffy just in time. However, he lost his left arm in that moment.
Luffy cried, feeling incredibly guilty. However, Shanks encouraged Luffy and was happy that Luffy was okay. This moment is one of the most iconic in the One Piece story.
6. Luffy Was Frozen by Aokiji
At the end of the battle against Foxy, Luffy and his friends faced Admiral Aokiji. Aokiji's presence at the time made Robin feel extremely threatened, as she was still traumatized by the Buster Call incident that had occurred in Ohara in the past.
Aokiji then informed Luffy and his friends of Nico Robin's threat. He even went to the extreme of freezing her body, enraging Luffy.
Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji then teamed up to attack Aokiji. However, they were all defeated because Aokiji was too overpowered. Luffy, realizing the danger, ordered his entire crew to flee, stating that he would face Aokiji alone.
The outcome of the battle was clear. Luffy's body ended up frozen by Aokiji's ice powers. Fortunately, Aokiji gave him a chance to live. If he wanted, he could have shattered Luffy's body to pieces. However, he let Luffy escape because he owed Luffy a great debt of gratitude to Luffy's grandfather, Garp.
5. Luffy Was Dying in the Arabasta Desert
In the battle in Arabasta, Luffy had to face a very powerful enemy, Crocodile, who was then a member of the Shichibukai. The difference in their strength was stark, as Crocodile was far superior to Luffy.
Crocodile even underestimated Luffy and considered him a naive pirate. When they first fought, Crocodile easily defeated Luffy in a short time. He even caused Luffy to die by trapping him in quicksand.
At that moment, Luffy's chances of survival were slim. However, he was able to survive and escape the quicksand with the help of Nico Robin. Robin saved Luffy because she was attracted to Luffy, who bore the initial D.
4. Nika's Awakening Moment
The battle against Kaido was one of Luffy's most difficult to win. Kaido's strength was on a different level. Even Luffy needed several rounds and extra strength to defeat Kaido.
Luffy was defeated several times by Kaido, putting his life on the line, from being imprisoned in Udon to being thrown into the sea. However, he managed to survive all of them.
In the final battle against Kaido, Luffy suffered a fatal attack from Kaido. At the time, Kaido was convinced Luffy was dead.
In the midst of this desperate situation, a miracle occurred. Luffy's heart suddenly started beating again, and he awakened a new power: the power of the Sun God Nika.
The moment of Nika's awakening became the turning point in the battle, as Luffy's power increased many times over, allowing him to defeat Kaido.
3. Luffy Escaped Marineford
During the battle at Marineford, Luffy was often in danger and nearly died, as many enemies targeted him, from Shichibukai members like Mihawk to Marine admirals.
However, Luffy survived thanks to the protection of his comrades like Jinbe and Ivankov, as well as the commanders of the Whitebeard Pirates and their allies. However, the situation became extremely serious and chaotic when Ace died at the hands of Akainu.
Luffy was under immense mental stress. Furthermore, he was still Akainu's target. Luffy was at a complete disadvantage at that time. Despite Jinbe and the Whitebeard commanders desperately protecting him, he barely had a chance to escape Marineford safely, especially since he was seriously injured.
Fortunately, Shanks arrived at that moment to stop the fighting. Furthermore, Law and the Heart Pirates also arrived and gave Luffy and Jinbe a ride to escape Marineford. Law and his crew immediately responded to the situation and rescued Luffy from the critical situation.
2. Luffy Survived Magellan's Poison
Before going to Marineford to thwart Ace's execution, Luffy sneaked into Impel Down while Ace was still imprisoned there. While there, Luffy had to face Impel Down's guards, including ferocious monsters and the brutally powerful Jailer Beast.
Luffy initially survived and overcame every challenge there. However, he suffered a terrible fate when he encountered the warden, Magellan. Their powers were on a completely different level.
Magellan possessed the poison-based Doku Doku no Mi devil fruit. Not only were his attacks deadly, but Magellan also possessed strong defenses and was invulnerable to normal attacks. In short, Luffy was soundly defeated by Magellan, and his body was heavily poisoned.
Luffy was in a desperate situation, and his chances of survival were likely slim. However, once again, Luffy was very fortunate. He had a very loyal partner, Bon-chan. Seeing Luffy's dire situation, Bon-chan desperately tried to save him and find Ivankov so he could get help.
Bon-chan's efforts paid off when she and Luffy were rescued by Ivankov, who was stationed at Level 5.5 of Impel Down.
Ivankov possessed the power of Horu Horu no Mi. He injected Luffy with a special hormone that increased his chances of survival. In exchange, his lifespan was shortened. Besides Ivankov's power, Luffy's strong will and determination to survive were other factors that helped him survive Magellan's poison.
1. The Moment Luffy Was About to Be Executed by Buggy
Of all the moments Luffy has survived death, this is perhaps the most iconic and unforgettable. It could be said that this moment was truly miraculous and beyond logic.
While Luffy was in Logue Town, he was captured by Buggy and taken to the execution stage. At that point, he had no chance of escaping Buggy. The only thing Luffy could do was surrender and accept his fate with a smile.
In the final seconds before Buggy swung his sword at Luffy's neck, a bolt of lightning suddenly struck from the sky. This phenomenon not only saved Luffy from certain death but also left those who witnessed the incident in awe.
It honestly remains a mystery whether the lightning was purely natural or perhaps related to the power of Dragon, who was also in Logue Town at the time.
