My Neighbor Totoro was directed by Hayao Miyazaki and released in 1988. This anime film presents a simple but interesting storyline. The story focuses on two sisters who move to a rural area and experience magical things.

9. Yasuko Kusakabe
Yasuko Kusakabe is the mother of Satsuki and Mei who is suffering from an illness and is being treated at Shichikokuyama Hospital. She looks like mothers in general who have a gentle and caring nature.
Satsuki and Mei as well as their father often visit the hospital to visit their mother. They are very happy when they can be with their mother. They hope that their mother will recover quickly.
8. Kanta's Granny
The next most interesting character is Kanta's Granny. She often takes care of Satsuki and Mei when their fathers are both at work. She has a kind, patient and loving nature.
Every day, Granny spends time in the rice fields. She sometimes takes Satsuki and Mei to see the rice fields, especially during harvest season. Both of them occasionally help Granny's work.
7. Kanta Oogaki
Kanta Oogaki is a village boy who is the same age as Mei. He has a tsundere personality. He seems to like Mei, but is too proud to show his feelings openly.
Although Kanta is not very familiar with Mei, he is basically very caring towards Mei. When the weather was raining heavily, he lent his umbrella to Mei and Satsuki who were taking shelter on the side of the road.
6. Tatsuo Kusakabe
Satsuki and Mei have a good father, namely Tatsuo Kusakabe. He works in the archeology and anthropology department of the University of Tokyo. He usually comes home from work in the evening.
Tatsuo often invites his daughter to talk about many things. He always tried to answer his two daughters' curiosity well. Apart from that, he is very responsible and loves his family sincerely.
5. Susuwatari
Susuwatari is a soot spirit that is tiny and black in color. They live in empty houses that are not inhabited by humans. They always move in groups.
When Mei and Satsuki arrived at their new house, both of them were curious about Susuwatari's figure. However, the creatures soon left the house and looked for a new place to live.
4. Satsuki Kusakabe
Satsuki Kusakabe is the eldest daughter and good sister to Mei. She has a cheerful nature and is very caring towards her younger sister. She often invites Mei to play in her free time.
Even though she is still a child, Satsuki also has a quite mature side. She loved her family with all her heart. Because of this, she felt worried if something happened to her sick mother.
3. Mei Kusakabe
Mei Kusakabe is Satsuki's younger sister who is cute and innocent. She also often acts childish and has a high curiosity. She was the first to meet Totoro.
Mei is always enthusiastic when telling Mei about things that are new and interesting to her. She is sometimes difficult to control and likes to act as she pleases. As a proof, she got lost and caused trouble for the people in the village.
2. Nekobus
Nekobus is one of the cute creatures that appears in My Neighbor Totoro. As the name suggests, this creature has the form of a combination of a cat and a bus. He usually acts as a means of transportation for Totoro.
One of the interesting sides of Nekobus is that he can manipulate the shape of his body which functions as an entrance. He also has a friendly and kind nature because he helped Satsuki when she was looking for Mei's whereabouts.
1. Totoro
Perhaps there is no doubt that the first position is occupied by Totoro. He is very popular and has become a typical icon of Studio Ghibli. He is a forest spirit whose appearance is cute and looks like a combination of a cat, tanuki and owl.
There are three Totoros introduced in the story. All three have different body shapes and colors. Totoro have a habit of burping and smiling happily when something interests them.
